    What is a Hummus Plate?

Butter boards may have taken social media by storm in the last few weeks. If you’re unsure of what a butter board is, it’s a board of butter with various toppings meant to be shared with others as a snack. The hummus board is a Middle Eastern variation.

This plate is an alternative to a butter board. It is hummus spread onto a plate or board with whatever flavor combinations you prefer. Additionally, you can serve the plate with crackers, pita chips, or fresh vegetables such as carrots and celery. Going to a party? Bring this as an appetizer. However, in our household, a hummus plate is always a welcome after-school snack!

How to Make a Hummus Plate

    Selecting Your Hummus

You can easily make hummus from dried chickpeas or canned chickpeas. Using dried chickpeas does increase the time spent making the hummus. However, if you’re pinched for time or don’t have the ingredients on hand to make the hummus from scratch, using a premade hummus works as well.

When choosing a hummus, select a non-flavored option. Brands offer flavors like Everything Hummus, Roasted Red Pepper, Jalapeno, etc. You can decide which flavors you want to add to your toppings by choosing the original hummus.

    Process - Preparing Your Toppings

    1. Prepare your pickled onions for a few hours before putting together your hummus plate.
    2. Add 2-3 teaspoons of salt and warm water to a bowl. Thinly and evenly slice the red onion and add to the bowl of salt water. Mix thoroughly and make sure all of the onion is submerged.
    3. After a few hours, drain the water and squeeze the juice of half a lemon. Allow to sit for another 30-minutes while prepping the remaining ingredients.
    4. Finely dice the fresh vegetables and herbs of your choice.
    5. Spread the cold hummus onto your plate.
    6. Top with pickled onion and fresh vegetables.
    7. Then top with olives and fresh herbs.
    8. Next, top with ground sumac.
    9. Lastly, finish the board with a liberal drizzle of olive oil.
